Southwark History

Southwark is an area of South East London broadly speaking around and to the South of London Bridge and part of the London Borough of the same name. It’s only around 1.5 miles from the heart of London and is a busy transport hub and a thriving community also being strictly part of what is called Inner London. Within the borough also are several main centres of population and residential areas; Bermondsey, Elephant and Castle, Borough, Canada Water and Surrey Quays being just a few of the better known. London Underground Services are very well southwark man and vanrepresented throughout the whole area with the Jubilee Line and Northern Line mainly, in addition to National Rail services at London Bridge, itself a major rail and bus hub for this part of London. By road, it is similarly well serviced with the inner ring road A201 and the main A2 running through the Borough supporting a host of London Bus routes. Originally a Metropolitan Borough, it became part of Greater London and received its current title in 1965 although the earliest traces of settlement here probably date back as far as the 1370’s.The main thrust of the development came with the arrival of the railway in 1837 and the underground train service some time later Much like much of the South Bank of the Thames, Southwark as an area has seen steady development over the years, moving gradually away from a history focused on light industry towards a more service-based nature combined with large chunks of residential settlement. It’s location not only means that the City and the West End are within walking distance but also that it retains an identity of its own, being south of the river. A nice blend. The housing within the area is a real mixture of council developments, older property, and high value gated communities existing almost side by side. The heart of Southwark today though is Borough high street (originally the Roma road Watling Street)running in more or less a straight line from London Bridge to Elephant and Castle. Off this thoroughfare lies the popular Borough Market, by far the most popular shopping area within Southwark and home to a thriving daily operation of temporary stall selling food and fancy shops full of desirable if little more unusual goods. It’s a great place to just hang out in one of its many bars or coffee shops and simply watch the world go by and lots of people do exactly that. As mentioned there are other developments within the larger Borough area, at Elephant and Castle and to a lesser extent Bermondsey but for retail purposes, it’s best to stick to Borough high street and its environs. It goes without saying that the same also applies to bars and restaurants as most of the best are in this area too, mainly around Borough market. A good example would be The Rake on Winchester Walk, a tiny pub serving great food, tucked away behind the main market, Also try Roast on Stoney Street, a superb restaurant and probably the area’s best eating spot. Famous people from Southwark are numerous, but William Shakespeare stands out. Historical Place of Interest: The Globe Theatre, home of Shakespeare.
