About Bethnal Green – Man And Van Bethnal Green
Located around three miles east of Central London, Bethnal Green forms part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is serviced both by bus services and the Central Line at Bethnal Green Station itself as well as an additional over ground train link available nearby at Cambridge Heath. The underground station itself was the scene of a wartime catastrophe in 1943 when 500 or so were killed after a reported direct hit from a German bomb, although no official report was made available. Several unexploded bombs have been discovered in the area since The history of Bethnal Green has always been steeped in the weaving industry becoming particularly prominent in the eighteenth century, and in fact, a lot of the housing in the area was built to accommodate that business. It was however reputed, by the end of the nineteenth century, to be one of the country’s poorest slums, hence the erection of the first ever council development Boundary Estate near Shoreditch. The area was also touched by one of the history’s most infamous criminals, none other than Jack the Ripper operated in the western part of the neighborhood. Not content with that claim to infamy, Bethnal Green was also home to gang-lord Kray twins during the 1960’s. A healthy dose of gentrification was called for then, and largely this has occurred over recent years. From a shopping perspective, Bethnal Green has a large variety of mostly non-chain stores with a definite slant towards multi-culturalism, itself a feature of the area in recent years. It has become famous for its ability to supply a staple London meal (Pie, Mash, and Jellied Eels), in among all the great curry houses, etc. that are available. Also in the area, though not of an edible nature is the Columbia Road flower market. Certainly, London’s best and is open every Sunday, with almost all the produce grown locally( mainly in Essex) While you’re there stop off at one of the seafood stalls or bars which line the street. In all, a great way to spend a Sunday. Bethnal Green is served by a huge variety of schools as well as a technical college. The culture doesn’t end there as a Museum Of Childhood; actually, part of the Victoria and Albert Museum is situated locally and re-opened after an extensive renovation in 2006 incorporating a new cafe facility. In summary, a diverse part of the East-End, immersed in history, with a lot to offer, not least a bunch of flowers Historical place of Interest: Museum Of Childhood
