Dulwich refers to an area of suburban South east London, most of it contained within the London Borough of Southwark but some of it in the neighbouring Borough of Lambeth. Split into four main sections: North, East, West and Dulwich itself, it was until 1889 part of Surrey before becoming part of London. By road, it is accessed easily from the A205 South Circular route, on which bus routes to London run. By train, while outside the grasp of the London Underground system, over ground trains run into Central London regularly from West Dulwich (to Victoria) and from East Dulwich (to London Bridge).Other stations nearby are Denmark Hill and Herne Hill. The first evidence of Dulwich was in 967 AD when it was a mere hamlet outside London. By 1333 the population of Dulwich had hardly exploded, at that time still only officially numbering 100! In 1811 around the time the Dulwich Picture Gallery was built, the population was on the increase, and by 1900 it had reached around 10,000. The Dulwich village of today is quite a charming place and still retains many of its 18th and 19th-century buildings. as well as the original shopping street. It remains un thankfully- commercialised and is a conservation area. The village borders Dulwich Park where the annual Dulwich Horse and Motor show is held. In contrast, West Dulwich is a mainly residential area, and North Dulwich is in close proximity to Camberwell and Loughborough Junction, both urbaner in nature and consequently miles away in the atmosphere from the quaint charm of the village itself. East Dulwich borders Peckham and has its own shopping area, the main street being Lordship Lane, where bars, shops, and restaurants can be easily found. The best good eating though can also be found in Dulwich village, Le Piaf being a great example of French elegance and of course the ever reliable Pizza Express have a restaurant in the heart of the village also One of the main features of Dulwich is the independent boy’s school, Dulwich College, founded in 1619 by successful Elizabethan actor Edward Alleyn. It occupies a prominent position in the village, owns a boat-house on the Thames as well as large plots of land in the Dulwich area. It has a fine reputation as one of the best schools of its kind and the one of the largest, enrolling around 1500 pupils at a time. Dulwich has its fair share of famous residents too, Enid Blyton the children’s author lived there as did ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. More recently comedian Jo Brand and actor James Nesbitt have called Dulwich home Historical Place of Interest: Dulwich Picture Gallery.
